Geology is the science that studies the Earth – how it was formed, how it evolved, how it works, and how we can help preserve it. This series of activities will be an introduction to the topic of Earth Sciences.

Think about it: We are over six billion human beings on a hunk of rock hurtling through space. Have you ever wondered how old that piece of rock is or what it is made of? Or why some areas can be so different from the surrounding area? Well this series of activities will get you closer to the answers and one activity will let you manipulate some of the information you collect into a ‘fake’ answer. This activity is to engage your critical thinking so you can be ever vigilant when reading the ‘truth’.

The surface of the Earth is continually being created and destroyed – not at a rate that we can see – and the surface is being built up of masses of mineral material. The masses of mineral materials are called rocks.

Here you will find a series of activities that will lead students to play with some of the oldest parts of the planet with some of the youngest (rocks and computers). Here is a chance to play with your knowledge and deepen your understanding of how rock solid the planet is and how fragile our perch on it is.

The project could take the form of a PhotoStory, a web page, a blog, a PowerPoint presentation, a Word document, or even a poster. This decision is up to the teacher.
